I am working with the CyberGlove interface in VirTools, but not on anything quite this much fun. Luckily now there is the Wii. The comments say the project was to explore providing an illusion of haptics.
Sensics posted a paper titled: “Are Existing Head-Mounted Display ‘Good Enough’?” The result of the survey is that most users do not feel HMD’s have adequate performance. A couple significant factors in display choice that are not addressed are multi-person collaboration requirements and cost.
By a wide gap, Sensics provides the most resolution available in an HMD. Even better, they have adopted a business model that allows you buy just the number of tiled displays you need and upgrade to more without penalty. It has been a year since I first tried on a Sensics display. Since then they have made significant improvements in the weight of the display and in reducing how noticeable the seperations are between tiles.
Here is a slightly out of focus shot of the Sensics display configured with 2×3 800×600 OLED displays per eye at SIGGRAPH in San Diego. This configuration that can be driven from a single high end workstation.
The reduced weight of the new system makes standing up and moving around much easier.
I just stumbled onto a link where a live audio stream is being broadcast from the ACM Sandbox Symposium. Tomorrow there will be panel sessions on rapid prototyping included a presenter from EA Games talking about 3D prototypes using VirTools: http://sandbox.siggraph.org/panels.html#2

Sandbox Symposium http://sandbox.siggraph.org/about.html
04-05, August 2007, San Diego, CA
The second annual ACM SIGGRAPH Sandbox Symposium is a co-located conference with SIGGRAPH 07. Sandbox looks to disseminate the latest theory and practice of videogame design and development, and to promote critical dialogue on their innovative, artistic, societal and individual ramifications. The symposium is a forum for innovative research and advances in videogame theory, practice and criticism. Video games are a singular technological medium, comparable in cultural impact to the telephone, television or the Internet. What are the creative, technological and commercial challenges facing this medium in the future? How do we relate great stories that leverage advances in technology? What is the continuing impact of this medium on individuals and society?

If you wish to see some of the procedings via the web, video streams of the conference will be available.
